The project owns the clock
Pathways groups learning into levels, but a level is not a duration. One project may ask for a five-to-seven-minute prepared speech, another may combine a speech with questions or role-play, and another may ask for a longer keynote-style delivery. Assigning one timer to every Level 4 or Level 5 project can make a rehearsal confidently wrong.
Start with the current project page in Base Camp. Identify whether the listed time covers only prepared remarks or the complete activity. Then check what your evaluator and vice president education expect in the meeting. The public examples below help you recognize several common assignments; they do not replace the project you enrolled in.
Named assignments, not level-wide rules
These examples were checked against Toastmasters’ public accessible project descriptions on August 23, 2026. Program availability and an individual member’s assignment can differ, so Base Camp remains the operational source.

Read the nouns
Managing a Difficult Audience is the clearest example. The public description calls for a five-to-seven-minute prepared speech, while audience members interrupt and the whole speaking-and-responding exercise takes twelve to fifteen minutes. Time the complete exercise when rehearsing the role-play, but keep the prepared content shaped for its own shorter allocation.

The public catalog names two eighteen-to-twenty-two-minute keynote-style assignments: Prepare to Speak Professionally in Presentation Mastery and Deliver Your Message with Humor in Engaging Humor. Other Level 5 work has other timing. Use the long-speech setup only when one of those assignments—or your current instructions—actually specifies it.

Use Base Camp or the current evaluator form. Confirm the minimum, maximum, and whether questions, interruptions, or another activity share the clock.
Choose a named preset only when the title and scope match. Otherwise use Custom current assignment and copy all three cues exactly.
Start from the real opening, preserve planned pauses and interaction, and continue through the final line. A stopped-and-restarted paragraph is not a full-run time.
Save the result, identify one section to cut or clarify, and repeat. Compare complete attempts rather than speeding up every sentence to rescue an overloaded draft.

There is no single Pathways speech length. Public project descriptions include many 5–7-minute speeches, a 10–12-minute Reflect on Your Path assignment, a 12–15-minute complete difficult-audience exercise, and named 18–22-minute keynote-style projects. Your current Base Camp assignment controls.
