How to Be an Ah-Counter in Toastmasters
The Ah-Counter is a listening role in Toastmasters meetings. Your job is to track filler words and sounds that speakers use as crutches when they are searching for the right words.
Common filler words to track: "Ah," "Um," "Er," "You know," "So," "Like," "Right," "OK," "Basically," "Actually," "Literally."
At the start of the meeting: Introduce yourself and explain your role. Let members know which filler words you will be tracking.
During the meeting: Keep a tally for each speaker. Track every word, role, and Table Topics response — not just prepared speeches.
At your report: Report each speaker's count by name. Be encouraging — the goal is awareness, not embarrassment. Members use filler words without realizing it.
Pro tip: A speaker who uses zero filler words deserves special recognition! Silence between thoughts is a sign of a confident, polished speaker.
