Complete guide and script for the Toastmasters Table Topics Master role
What is the Table Topics Master?
The Table Topics Master (TTM) runs the impromptu speaking segment of the Toastmasters meeting. You choose a theme, prepare questions or prompts, and invite members and guests to speak for 1 to 2 minutes on the spot. Your job is to keep the energy high, manage the flow of the segment, and create a fun, inclusive environment for spontaneous speaking.
Opening Introduction Script
"Madam/Mister Toastmaster, fellow Toastmasters, and honored guests.
My name is [Your Name] and I have the pleasure of being your Table Topics Master today.
Table Topics is the impromptu speaking portion of our meeting. When called upon, you'll have just a moment to collect your thoughts, then speak for between one and two minutes on the topic I give you. The Timer will signal you with green at one minute, yellow at one and a half minutes, and red at two minutes.
Today's theme is [THEME]. All of my questions will be related to [brief theme explanation]. Remember — there are no wrong answers. The goal is to think on your feet and speak with confidence.
Let's get started. I'd like to invite our first speaker..."

[Read the question or prompt clearly and with enthusiasm.]
[SPEAKER NAME]?"
Always end your introduction with the speaker's name. This is the Toastmasters convention to signal the speaker to come forward.

Closing the Table Topics Segment
"That brings us to the end of today's Table Topics segment. I want to give a warm round of applause to all of our speakers — [list names] — who spoke so brilliantly on the spot today.
Remember to vote for your favorite Table Topics speaker when ballots are distributed. Madam/Mister Toastmaster, I return control of the meeting back to you."
Tips for Success
Prepare more topics than you need
Always have 2–3 extra questions ready in case you have more time or extra speakers want to participate.
Keep questions open-ended
Broad questions work better than niche ones — they allow anyone in the room to answer from personal experience.
Invite guests first
Guests don't vote for Best Table Topics, so invite them early so they can participate without pressure.
Watch the clock
Keep an eye on the overall meeting time. If running long, you may need to skip one or two speakers.
