How to Be a Timer in Toastmasters

The Timer is responsible for keeping the Toastmasters meeting on schedule. Every speaker is given a specific time range, and it's your job to signal them using colored cards or lights.

Standard time ranges: Prepared speeches are usually 5-7 minutes (green at 5:00, yellow at 6:00, red at 7:00). Table Topics responses are 1-2 minutes. Evaluations are 2-3 minutes.

At the start: Explain the timing signals to all members and guests. Show the colored cards/device. Announce the time ranges for each segment.

During speeches: Hold up the green card when minimum time is reached, yellow at the midpoint, and red at maximum. After red, the speaker has 30 seconds grace before being disqualified (in contests).

At your report: Announce each speaker's time. In contests, note who was "in time" (between green and red). For regular meetings, report times without judgment.
