Structure (the 5-part formula): (1) Introduce yourself and your relationship to the groom. (2) Tell one funny but appropriate story about the groom. (3) Say something genuinely kind about the bride. (4) Offer heartfelt wishes to the couple. (5) End with a toast everyone can join.

Keep it clean: Avoid stories that embarrass the groom in front of his new in-laws. The test: would you be comfortable if his grandmother was in the room? (She probably is.)

Practice out loud: Reading a speech and speaking it are very different. Rehearse at least 5 times out loud to find the natural rhythm.

Know your ending: Always know your last line by heart. A confident, clear closing toast is what people remember most.

Drink responsibly: Have at most one drink before your speech. Nerves and alcohol are a risky combination for public speaking.
