The Word of the Day is a beloved Toastmasters tradition managed by the Grammarian. At the start of each meeting, the Grammarian introduces a new vocabulary word with its definition and usage. Throughout the meeting, members are encouraged to use this word naturally in their speeches and responses.
Choosing the right Word of the Day helps members expand their vocabulary, improve their communication skills, and adds an element of fun to every meeting. The best words are those that are useful in everyday communication yet not overly common.
At the end of the meeting, the Grammarian tallies how many times each member used the word correctly and announces the count during their report.
"My role today is Grammarian. I will listen for clear language, vivid phrasing, and use of the Word of the Day. Today's word is Eloquent, which means fluent or persuasive in speaking or writing. For example: Her eloquent speech moved the entire audience to tears."
"In my Grammarian report, I heard the Word of the Day used [count] times. [Member name] used it especially well in this sentence: [quote]. I also noticed strong phrasing in [speaker name]'s speech, and my language tip for next time is [tip]."

The Word of the Day is a vocabulary word introduced by the Grammarian at the start of a Toastmasters meeting. Members try to use it naturally during prepared speeches, Table Topics, and meeting reports.
Choose a word that fits the meeting theme, is useful in normal conversation, and can be used in more than one sentence. Avoid words that are too obscure, technical, or hard to pronounce for the room.
A short intro works best: announce the word, pronounce it clearly, give the definition, use it in a sentence, and invite members to use it throughout the meeting.
A good example sentence sounds like something a speaker could say in a meeting. It should show the meaning clearly without forcing the word into an awkward sentence.
A good Toastmasters Word of the Day is useful, positive, easy to explain, and flexible enough for several members to use naturally during the meeting.
There is no fixed requirement. The Grammarian usually counts correct uses and highlights memorable examples during the report.
Yes. Table Topics is often the easiest place for members and guests to try the word because the response is short and conversational.
