Table Topics Master Guide

How to run an engaging impromptu speaking session

Your Role as Table Topics Master

The Table Topics Master leads the impromptu speaking segment of a Toastmasters meeting. Your job is to prepare thought-provoking questions, call on speakers, and keep the energy of the room high during the 20-30 minute segment.

Before the meeting: Prepare 10-15 questions on a theme. Have more than you need — you may skip some based on time. Themes work well (travel, leadership, pop culture, hypotheticals).

Opening the segment: Introduce yourself and explain the Table Topics format to any guests. Remind speakers of the 1-2 minute time limit and the timer signals.

During the segment: Call on speakers who haven't spoken yet (guests first, then members who don't have major roles). Read the question clearly, then step aside.

Keeping energy up: Keep transitions brief. Thank each speaker by name after they finish. Save a fun or energetic question for last.

Pro Tips

  • Choose a theme to make preparation easier and questions flow naturally
  • Avoid yes/no questions — open-ended questions give speakers more to work with
  • Don't call on people mid-sentence; wait until the room is quiet
  • Have a backup question ready if you finish early
  • Coordinate with the timer before the segment starts
  • Prepare a brief closing to thank all speakers and hand back to the TMOTD
